Tom Schnaubers Not-Pooh Songs are absolutely delightful. The composer has set to music six children’s poems by A. A. Milne, four from When We Were Very Very Young (“The Alchemist”, “The Mirror”, “The Four Friends”, and “If I Were King”) and two from Now We Are Six ("The Charcoal Burner" and "The Engineer"). The work is offered by Noteworthy Sheet Music, LLC in two publications, one for female voice and flute, the other for female voice and oboe. The oboe line is sufficiently different from the flute line in terms of register to warrant it being published as a separate edition (i.e., the flute version makes use of that instrument’s wider range by putting some material in higher octaves). Also, the flute edition includes an alternate variation of “The Mirror” for voice and alto flute, whereas the oboe edition includes an alternate variation of “The Mirror” for voice and English horn.

It’s clear from hearing this music that Schnauber gets a real kick out of Milne’s poetry. The flute/oboe comments, echoes, etc. go with or against the voice line very effectively and entertainingly. These songs will have broad appeal to both players and audiences, and there’s a lot that a pair of performers could do with them. The music isn’t easy, but provides just the sort of challenges that the adventuresome player loves; in places, for example, the flute jumps from C7 to C4, plays multiphonics, and executes finger snaps. But, as the composer has pointed out, just because the music is somewhat demanding doesn’t mean that it should be presented seriously in performance; on the contrary, players should have fun with these pieces and convey the intended joy and playfulness of the work.

Note that both performers are to play from the score, so flutists and oboists may want to print their copy of the score single-sided to avoid a few difficult page turns.

Bridge – Two Pieces: Pensiero and Allegro appassionato – trans. for Clarinet and Piano

Bridge 2Pieces Cl Pf nsmTwo Pieces: Pensiero and Allegro appassionato, by Frank Bridge

Transcribed for B-flat Clarinet and Piano by C.A.Vater

Score and Part; PDF $10.99

Certain chamber works written for viola can also work very beautifully when transcribed for clarinet, and indeed may actually be coveted by clarinetists.  Brahms’ Two Songs for Voice, Viola and Piano, Op. 91 is one such piece, and our transcription has become one of NSM’s most popular publications.   Clarinetists may discover that our adaptation of the viola part of Frank Bridge’s Two Pieces: Pensiero and Allegro appassionato, written for viola and piano, is also well-conceived and enjoyable to play.  As suggested by their titles, these two pieces were written in very different styles, but they complement each other well, showing off Bridge’s composing versatility and providing performers an opportunity to display a range of emotions and capabilities.  In our edition, we have raised the Pensiero key from F minor to G minor, taken a few passages in both pieces 8va to bring them into clarinet range, and created clarinet-friendly adaptations for the viola’s occasional double stops, but otherwise the pieces remain as Bridge composed them.

Score, 10 pages; Clarinet part, 3 pages; Total, 16 pages.

Glazunov - Chant du Ménestrel - trans. for A-Clarinet and Piano

Glazunov Menestrel A Cl Pno nsmGlazunov - Chant du Ménestrel, Op.71, by Alexander Glazunov

Transcribed for A-Clarinet and Piano by C.A.Vater

Score and Part; PDF $7.99

Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936) was an eminent composer in the late Russian romantic tradition.  In 1901, he published two versions of hisChant du Ménestrel, one for cello and orchestra and another for cello and piano, dedicating the work to Alexandre Wierzbilowicz, principal cello at the Russian Imperial Opera Orchestra and a professor at the Conservatory. Chant du Ménestrel (Minstrel’s Song) is a sorrowful, romantic piece that evokes the image of a Russian troubadour wandering the countryside, singing his sad songs.  The lyrical, expressive solo cello line is without double stops and readily transcribed for other instruments.  Written in the key of F# minor, this short work (average duration 3-4 minutes) adapts especially well for A-clarinet.

Score, 4 pages; A-Clarinet part, 2 pages; Total, 10 pages.

Mendelssohn - On Wings of Song - Alto Flute & Piano

MendelssohnOWOS.NSMOn Wings of Song, Op.34, No.2, by Felix Mendelssohn

Transcribed for Alto Flute and Piano by C.A.Vater

Alto Flute Part and Piano Score, PDF $5.99

Having made significant contributions as a poet, essayist, journalist, and critic, Christian Johann Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) is considered one of the great German writers of the 19th century.  Many of his romantic poems were chosen as the text for Lieder by such eminent composers as Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms.  The Heine poem Auf Flügeln des Gesanges, which translates into English as On Wings of Song, was set to music by Felix Mendelssohn and published as No. 2 of six songs for voice and piano constituting his Opus 34.  Auf Flügeln des Gesanges became one of Mendelssohn's most famous art songs, and remains popular to this day.  Arrangements and transcriptions of the music have been created for small orchestra, flute and guitar, flute and piano, violin and piano, two violins, cello and piano, treble choir, and piano solo, among others.  With its charming, simple melody and narrow pitch range, On Wings of Song is highly accessible and understandably a favorite of vocal and instrumental soloists of all levels.  Our transcription is in the key of G, and the song is especially mellow and lovely when played on alto flute.

Alto Flute part, 1 page; Piano Score, 4 pages; Total, 8 pages.

Beach - Romance, trans. for Flute & Piano

Beach Romance fl pf nsmRomance, Op.23, by Mrs. H. H. A. Beach

Transcribed for Flute and Piano by C. A. Vater (originally for violin and piano)

Piano Score and Flute Part, PDF $8.99

Amy Marcy Cheney, who used Mrs. H. H. A. Beach as her professional name after marrying a Boston physician, began composing music at the age of four; throughout her lifetime she wrote more than 150 numbered works spanning a variety of genres.  Her pieces were received with great acclaim, and she became one of America’s leading composers and the first American woman composer to achieve widespread recognition in the United States and abroad.  She was also a renowned concert pianist.  Beach composed her Romance for Violin and Piano in 1893 for the occasion of the Women’s Musical Congress held the same year in Chicago during the World’s Columbian Exposition.  The piece was dedicated to the celebrated violinist Maud Powell, who joined Beach for the premiere performance at that Congress.  Highly romantic, melodic, charming, and passionate, the Romance is also technically complex yet graceful.  With a few modifications of the violin line, this gorgeous piece works nicely on flute; we provide both our NSM transcribed flute part and a score for flute and piano.

Ross - Cockles and Mussels - Harp Ensemble

ross cm nsmCockles and Mussels, James Yorkston

Arranged for Multi-Level Harp Ensemble by Judith Ross

Score and Parts for Harps I, II, & III, PDF $10.50

Cockles and Mussels, also known as Molly Malone or In Dublin's Fair City, is a popular song thought to have been first published in Boston, MA, in 1876, in a collection of college songs.  The 1884 London version, published by Francis Brothers & Day, lists the piece as a comic song composed by James Yorkston.  The piece is especially beloved in the city of Dublin, where a statue of Molly Malone has been erected on Grafton Street.

Judith Ross, founder and director of the Massachusetts Harp Ensemble, has created numerous mixed level harp arrangements over the years.  She welcomes harpists of all levels of expertise into her ensemble, so most of her arrangements are designed to include parts of different levels of difficulty.  That way, anyone can have a chance to participate and join in the fun.  The Massachusetts Harp Ensemble is a Boston area treasure, enjoyed and appreciated by local harp students and their teachers, many of whom are already familiar with Ms. Ross' arrangements in manuscript form.  Now some of these works are available to the broader harp community as new, typeset editions prepared by Noteworthy Sheet Music.  Cockles and Mussels includes two intermediate level pedal harp parts and one easy lever harp part.

Mozart - Concerto in Eb Major, K.495 - Alto Flute

mozart k.495 nsmConcerto in E-flat Major, K.495, by W. A. Mozart

Transcribed for Alto Flute (from horn and piano arrangement) by C.A.Vater

Alto Flute Part, PDF $7.99

Mozart's Horn Concerto No.4, K.495, was composed in 1786 and scored for solo horn, with two oboes, two horns, and strings (bassoon ad libitum).   The work consists of three movements—Allegro moderato, Romanza-Andante, and Rondo-Allegro vivace—with the rousing Rondo clearly evoking a hunt scene.   The horn player Henri Kling (1842-1918) created arrangements of all the Mozart horn concerti for horn and piano.   His transcription of K.495 was published by Breitkopf und Härtel, n.d. (ca. 1882).  We used the Kling edition, now in the public domain and available as a free pdf download from imslp.org, to create a transcription of the horn part for alto flute.  Our edition incorporates adjustments that account for differences in range and sonority between the alto flute and horn, while striving to maintain the style and character of the original composition.

We provide the alto flute part only; the piano score (horn and piano) by Henri Kling is freely available from imslp.org.

Ross - The Croppy Boy - Harp Ensemble

ross.croppy boy nsmThe Croppy Boy, Traditional Irish Ballad

Arranged for Multi-Level Harp Ensemble by Judith Ross

Score and Parts for Harps I, II, III, & IV, PDF $8.97

The Croppy Boy is one of the saddest lrish ballads of the 1798 rising.  The title refers to the young rebel soldiers, who wore their hair closely cropped.  This arrangement is specifically designed for performance by harpists at varying levels.  The Beginner, Easy, and lntermediate level parts are intended for lever harp, but can be played on pedal harp, and may be performed by one or more harpists.   The Advanced harp part, for the teacher or advanced student, is designed to be performed by one person on pedal harp, but can probably also be done on a lever harp having all the high and low strings.

Judith Ross received a B.M. with Distinction and M.A. from the Eastman School of Music.  She studied harp with Eileen Malone and Pierre Jamet, and harmony, keyboard, and composition with Nadia Boulanger (considered one of the greatest musical pedagogues of the 20th century).  She is a winner of the Paderewski Gold Medal in piano.  Ms. Ross has given frequent solo and orchestral performances throughout New England, and is the founder and director of the Massachusetts Harp Ensemble.   She has taught at the State University College of NY at Fredonia, Boston University, Lesley College, New England Conservatory, and El Coro de Niños in San Juan, Puerto Rico.   For 37 years she taught solfège, harmony, form and analysis, and harp at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA, where she is former Chair of the Theory Department.

Arriaga - Quartet No.1 - Flute

arriaga nsmQuartet No.1, by Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga

Violin 1 Transcribed for Flute by Peter H. Bloom

Flute Part, PDF $9.95

Peter H. Bloom wrote the following foreword (© 2014):

"Even among the most celebrated musical prodigies (Mozart, Mendelssohn, Pergolesi, and Varèse, for example), Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga's genius and technical mastery are exceptional. This D-minor quartet, one of three string quartets written in 1824, is a work of structural brilliance, rhetorical grace, and elegant intensity.

Adapting music originally written for violin to flute is often relatively straightforward. Occasional octave reassignment and re-interpretation of double stops are typical changes. But when a flute assumes the voice of the first violin in the context of a string quartet, further accommodations are usually necessary. Dynamic balance, sonority, clarity of phrasing and consistency of articulation among the ensemble require a reassessment of many interpretive indications that are native to the violin. In this arrangement we have, as a rule, eliminated Portato indications; they are useful for violinists but merely distracting to the flutist. Articulation and phrasing marks have occasionally been changed, or eliminated, in instances where violin-orientated directions might mislead the flutist.

A final thought: The flutist proposing to replace the first violin in a string quartet of this beauty and integrity may meet resistance from string-playing colleagues. After a fair reading, however, they'll share your enthusiasm for Arriaga's Quartet in D-minor for Flute and Strings."
