Rite 245A Rite for All Souls

The Mark Harvey Group

Americas Musicworks CD $19.97

The Mark Harvey Group’s A Rite for All Souls (available July 17, 2020 via Americas Musicworks) is a powerful and important historic recording.  It reaches across nearly 50 years from a time of great social turbulence in the US to deliver a message of urgency, compassion and healing that resonates today.

Mark Harvey, best known as the creative force behind Boston’s famed Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, has been a jazz activist, Methodist minister, trumpeter, and uncompromising explorer of new sonic territories for decades.  His early quartet, featuring renowned woodwind player Peter H. Bloom and percussionists Craig Ellis and Michael Standish, takes listeners on an epic journey of discovery during a fully improvised 90-minute concert that encompasses serenity and turmoil, ravishing sounds and silence, poetry and melody.  MHGca1971 IG 817x566

A Rite for All Souls is a long-lost concert recording, never previously heard.  The two-CD set presents a single unedited performance by The Mark Harvey Group from October 31, 1971 in the sanctuary of Boston’s Old West Church.  The original reel-to-reel recording was re-discovered in 2018 and digitally re-mastered for release in 2020 on the Americas Musicworks label.

When The Mark Harvey Group performed A Rite for All Souls in 1971, they were mourning, protesting, and commemorating the tragic losses of the Vietnam war, and the lives lost or threatened by poverty, discrimination, and inequality.  Their music was a celebration and meditation, honoring souls departed and souls surviving during that turbulent time in American culture.  Today, we find ourselves in another dark and tumultuous time.  A Rite for All Souls speaks for all of us, as we share outrage and compassion, sorrow and remembrance, spiritual healing and the rediscovery of a common humanity.

“Unfolding free form improvisations, ever new and bold aural landscapes” - The Boston Globe

“Most important is the level of exploration from calm to sweetly cacophonous as led by Harvey’s trumpet and Peter Bloom’s tenor sax. - The Vinyl District

Amoroso nsmAmoroso: The Heartbeat of Brazil

Peter H. Bloom (flute, alto flute, bass flute and piccolo) and Larry Carsman (guitar), with guest artists Tod Baker (bass), Ricardo Monson (percussion), Billy Novick (saxophone, clarinet), & Miriam Rabson (violin)

Boston Musicworks CD $14.97

Amoroso celebrates the exotic legacy of the Brazilian chorino. Works by such venerated composers as Waldyr Azevedo, Ernesto Nazareth and Pixinguinha evoke the heat of the equatorial sun, the steamy cover of rainforest, and the pulsing rhythm of the ocean. The CD is a luscious and stirring collection of Brazilian chorinos infused with the musical tongues of Africa, South America and the Western Mediterranean.

“lush, romantic and thrilling...captures the magic of Brazil” —Wilson Melo, Reuters, San Paulo

Amoroso features a star-studded cast of musicians:

Peter H. Bloom, flutes, concertizes in the U.S. and abroad, and is featured on more than 40 recordings. He is a veteran with the world-renowned Aardvark Jazz Orchestra (44th season) and has appeared with jazz luminaries Charles Neville, Jaki Byard, Sheila Jordan, Geri Allen, Mark Harvey, and others.   All About Jazz praised his “hip, jazzy flute work,” while Jazz Improv hailed his “exquisite melody,” and Arts Fuse wrote, “His solos on flute and amplified flute are always highlights of a performance.”

Larry Carsman, guitar, has performed blues, calypso, reggae, classical, jazz and swing, from the concert halls of Boston to the nightclubs of Detroit to the pubs and posh hotels of the Caribbean. He was lead guitarist and co-founder of the James Montgomery Blues Band, and has appeared with legend Bonnie Raitt and Boston's famed Bo Winiker Orchestra, among others.

Billy Novick, saxophone & clarinet, has toured North America, Europe and Asia, and has made spotlight appearances at numerous jazz festivals, including the Kool, Newport, Edinburgh, Brecon (Wales), Marsiac (France), and Breda (Netherlands). He has released 17 albums as leader or co-leader, and appears as a sideman on more than 250 recordings. The Washington Post praised his “velvety jazz,” while Downbeat hailed his "sincerity...elegance…a lovely celebration of tunefulness.”

Mimi Rabson, violin, praised for “great chops and an attitude to match” (The Washington Post), has recorded with Itzhak Perlman and performed with the New England Ragtime Ensemble, the Klezmatics, Deborah Henson-Conant, and the Pablo Ablanedo Octet. She has appeared at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Wolf Trap, the Place des Arts in Montreal, and other venues. She teaches at Berklee College of Music.

Ricardo Monzon, percussion, has performed with the Boston Pops, Aretha Franklin, Mario Frangoulis, Donna Summer, Stanley Clark, Lenny White, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, the Greg Hopkins Big Band, and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Guatemala, to name a few. A sought-after studio musician, Ricardo can be heard on the Grammy nominated “Latin Album” with the Boston Pops. He teaches at Berklee College of Music.

Todd Baker, bass, played for two years with The Artie Shaw Orchestra and led bands on the Carnival Cruise Lines. He has played with Rosemary Clooney, Cab Calloway, The Four Freshman, and The Woody Herman Band, among others.

Exuberant Ellingtonia nsmExuberant Ellingtonia, Flute & Piano Sessions

Bloom/Funkhouser Duo

Americas Musicworks, AM CD 1597, $14.97

For almost 30 years, flutist Peter H. Bloom and pianist John Funkhouser have been performing together in a variety of venues and ensembles, including the internationally renowned Aardvark Jazz Orchestra.  Their virtuosity, creativity and rapport as a jazz duo are on full display in the flute and piano sessions recorded here for Exuberant Ellingtonia.  The CD showcases the Bloom/Funkhouser Duo’s vibrant and imaginative interpretations of classics and rarities by Duke Ellington and his extraordinary collaborators.  CD liner notes by Mark Harvey provide listeners with a fascinating guide to this stellar recording.

“one of those albums that we know are unique jewels…a work that explores the music of Duke Ellington in an intimate way, with the natural, and at the same time, so eloquent sound of flute and piano” – Félix Amador, Jazz, ese ruido, Spain

'Bloom's incisive flute, conjoined with Funkhouser's jaunty, swinging piano make for a fine partnership, one which brings some serious spark to these tunes…. Whether on the upbeat numbers like "Take the 'A' Train" and "Cottontail" or the more pensive "In a Sentimental Mood" or "Prelude to a Kiss," Bloom and Funkhouser bring characteristic style and brio to their renditions…. And while Bloom's ability to find the delightful mystery at the heart of "Isfahan" is exemplary, he does not shy away from taking it up a notch or two on "Take the 'A' Train," where his nimble solo is both stirring and technically impressive.' – Troy Dostert, AllAboutJazz.com, January 2022

Read another review of the Exuberant Ellingtonia CD in Textura, January 2022.

Bloom has been praised for “exquisite melody” (Jazz Improv), “amazing versatility” (ArtsFuse), and playing that is “wonderfully smoky and mysterious…the varying colors of the flutes provide a rich variety of timbres” (EarRelevant).  Funkhouser has been called “masterful…maintaining a delicate balance of power and agility with an instinctive musical sense” (AllAboutJazz.com).

Faces nsmFaces of Souls

Aardvark Jazz Orchestra

Leo Records CD LR 877 $14.97

The legendary Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, led by founder/director Mark Harvey since 1973, has been called “stunningly beautiful and adventurous,” (The New York City Jazz Record), “captivating” (Jazz Improv), “spellbinding” (The Boston Globe), and “one of the best jazz ensembles in the world” (Jazz Podium, Germany).  In 2020, the band released its 16th CD, Faces of Souls, featuring seven masterful compositions by band leader Harvey. The title track takes its inspiration from the Shaw Memorial in Boston, Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ powerful sculpture of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and his 54th Massachusetts Regiment, who were among the first African Americans to fight in the Civil War.  A companion piece, Consecration, also evokes the Shaw Memorial.  The other five pieces expand on the album’s themes of social justice and democratic values:  Of the People, an allusion to Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Sisyphus for the perennial struggle toward progress, Meltdown (conveying the turmoil and exhaustion of our current zeitgeist), Greta for the young climate activist, and Lament for the City, for the late Kip Tiernan, a tireless advocate for the dispossessed in Boston.

The New York City Jazz Record selected Aardvark’s Faces of Souls CD as one of five recordings in their “Best of 2020” Large Ensemble Releases category.

Jean Buzelin wrote in CultureJazz.fr, August 16, 2020: “The complexity and precision of the writing, the magnificence of the arrangements, the subtlety of the timbre, the space that is open to soloists…contribute to a music that is perfectly easy to read, avoids being too busy or inflated, and never comes at the expense of swing…Mark Harvey has an uncanny mastery for balancing and opposing orchestral masses, and he daringly creates unusual associations and complex rhythms. His orchestra “rings”, the nuances stand out, the colors vibrate, the power is expressed fully."

Listen to "Lament for the City" from the Faces of Souls CD on YouTube; this track opens with a lovely flute solo by Peter H. Bloom.

Eminent jazz writer and historian Bob Blumenthal interviewed Mark Harvey and played excerpts from Faces of Souls during a livestream CD celebration on November 15, 2020.  A recording of the event has been posted on the M.I.T. Music & Theater Arts website at https://mta.mit.edu/events/rebroadcast-aardvark-virtual-livestream-interview-and-cd-release.

Americas Musicworks CD $14.97

Peter H. Bloom, flute and piccolo; Steven Jackson, clarinet; James H. Johnston, violin; Patrick Jordan, viola; Henry Peyrebrune, double bass; and Kevin M'Dermott, tenor soloist.

In this critically acclaimed recording, D.C. Hall's New Concert and Quadrille Band reprises the repertoire, style, and spirit of the illustrious Hall Brothers' Band that were acclaimed from Maine to Louisiana from the late 1840s through the 1870s. The CD transports the listener to 19th-century America with wide-ranging repertoire that was popular at the time: reductions of operatic and symphonic works, chamber works, dramatic scenas, music for theatrical and popular dance, and music hall favorites.

Renowned for exquisite musicianship, vivid performances, and superb research, the new Hall’s Band was awarded The American Musicological Society's Noah Greenberg Award in 1990.

Grand Concert! was recorded on the stage at Mechanics Hall, Worcester, Massachusetts, upon the very stage where the original Hall's Brothers' Band concertized. The CD was recorded and edited by legendary award-winning engineer Bud Graham.
