  • Nielsen - Fantasy Pieces - Alto Flute & Piano

nielsen op2 245 px nsmFantasy Pieces, Op.2, by Carl Nielsen

Transcribed for Alto Flute by C.A.Vater

Piano Score and Alto Flute Part, PDF $9.99

The Fantasy Pieces for Oboe and Piano, Op.2 (Fantasistykker for obo og klavier) were composed in 1889, when Nielsen was 24.  They were written in the romantic idiom before his compositions became more experimental, chromatic, and dissonant.  Nielsen wrote the Fantasy Pieces for his good friend Olivo Kraüse, the Danish oboist and composer to whom the work is dedicated.  Nielsen and Krause were colleagues in the Royal Chapel Orchestra.   The Fantasy Pieces were premiered by Krause and the pianist Victor Bendix at a Royal Orchestra Soirée in Copenhagen in 1891.  Arrangements of the pieces for violin (with orchestra or piano), created by Hans Sitt, subsequently became quite popular.

Our transcription of the oboe part for alto flute is a simple transposition, as the entire oboe part falls nicely within the range of the alto flute.  Although the tonal characteristics of the alto flute and oboe are very different, the Fantasistykker sound so natural on alto flute that the listener might think that the two pieces were composed specifically for that instrument.

The first piece, Romance, is a beautiful andante that allows the alto flutist to exploit the rich, sensuous sonority of the instrument.  The contrasting second piece is a lively Humoresque in which the performer's lightheartedness and technical agility prevail.

Transcribed for Alto Flute by C.A.Vater

Alto Flute Part ― PDF $6.99

Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda (1801‒1866) was a Bohemian violinist, orchestra conductor, and prolific composer who wrote numerous compositions, including operas, symphonies, various works for violin and orchestra, piano pieces, and chamber music works.  He was considered a significant composer in his day, especially for pieces written early in his career, and his music received the praise of Robert Schumann.  Kalliwoda was immensely popular and a favorite of American concert-going audiences in the first half of the 19th century.

His Concertino, Op.110, for oboe and orchestra was first published by Schott in 1841.  An arrangement of the work for oboe and piano is available on imslp.org, in addition to an orchestral score and parts for oboe, violins I and II, violas, cellos, and basses.  Like many of Kalliwoda's earlier compositions, the Concertino is highly melodic and energetic.  We created a transcription of the solo oboe part for alto flute that gives alto flutists an opportunity to experience first-hand the joy of playing this style of classical 19th century bravura work, for which the alto flute is well-suited.   Perhaps it should be pointed out that Theodore Boehm, who developed the modern alto flute in G during the mid-1850's, intended that the alto become a new instrument in its own right, utilized in a variety of musical roles and characterized by a unique quality of sound.  Indeed, we think Boehm likely would have approved of our creating new opportunities, such as this transcription of the Kalliwoda Concertino, to show off the alto flute's versatility and the alto flute performer's virtuosity.

We provide our alto flute part only; appropriate parts for piano or orchestral accompaniment may be obtained as free pdf downloads from public domain resources, such as imslp.org.

Transcribed for Alto Flute and Piano by C.A.Vater

Piano Score and Alto Flute Part, PDF $8.25

Napoléon Coste (1805-1883) was born in a small village in the Départment of the Doubs, France.  He began to play guitar at the age of 6, studying with his mother who was an accomplished guitar performer.   Napoléon himself began teaching and performing on guitar as a teenager.   At age 24 he moved to Paris, where he studied under Fernando Sor, the renowned Spanish classical guitarist and composer.   Coste quickly established himself as a virtuoso and is widely acknowledged as the dominant French guitarist of his era.

Coste became famous not only as a guitar soloist, but also as a major composer of some 60 works, most of which were written for guitar.   His Op.37 "Cavatine" is a short, single-movement piece for piano and oboe (or violin or flute).   Melodic but lively in places, the work should appeal to amateurs of a moderate or higher skill level.   Our transposition of Cavatine falls nicely within the range of the alto flute and sounds appealing and completely natural on that instrument.  The Noteworthy Sheet Music edition includes a score for piano and alto flute, in addition to the transcribed alto flute part.

Transcribed for Alto Flute and Piano by C.A.Vater

Piano Score and Alto Flute Part, PDF $6.99

Gabriel Fauré composed his Berceuse(Op. 16) for violin (or cello) and piano in 1878-1879, and it was first published by J. Hamelle, Paris.   To this day, the Berceuse remains one of Fauré's most beloved and popular works.  The piece is simple but beautiful, short, with a quiet sweet melody that appeals to both performers and audiences alike.  It is no wonder that over the years the Berceuse has been transcribed for many other instruments; arrangements have been created for solo piano, viola, flute, alto saxophone, flute and harp, and string quartet, in addition to the composer's own arrangement for violin and orchestra.

Now, in response to an excellent suggestion we received from one of our customers, we add our own version of the Fauré Berceuse, a transcription for alto flute and piano.  Perhaps we are biased, but we think the alto flute is a wonderful instrument choice for this lullaby.   The piece is suitable for players of all levels.

Amy Marcy Cheney was born in Henniker, New Hampshire in 1867 and began composing music at the age of four.  Initially home-schooled as a pianist, she continued her music studies in Boston and made her professional debut as a pianist at age 16.   She later became a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  At 18, she married the prominent Boston physician Dr. Henry Harris Aubrey Beach and began using "Mrs. H. H. A. Beach" as her professional name.  She continued to perform occasionally as a pianist, but for many years she focused her musical skills primarily on composing.   After her husband's death in 1910, Mrs. Beach resumed her performing career, beginning with a three year tour of Europe, while also continuing to write music.   Her works were received with great acclaim, and Amy Beach became one of America's leading composers and the first American woman composer to achieve widespread recognition in the United States and abroad.   During her lifetime, she wrote more than 150 numbered works, spanning a variety of genres that included piano pieces, chamber music, orchestral works, sacred choral music, and a great many songs.

Amy Beach's 3 Compositions for Violin and Piano, Op.40, were first published in 1898.   Written in the romantic style, the three pieces are (1) the beautiful but sombre La Captive, (2) a lovely, lyrical Berceuse, and (3) a lively but still tender Mazurka.  In addition to alto flute transcriptions of all three pieces, we include in our edition a version of the Mazurka transcribed for flute and piano (score and part), for those wishing to give this option a try as well.

The following notes are excerpted, with permission, from the complete copyrighted foreword written by Peter H. Bloom for the Noteworthy Sheet Music edition of his transcription:

"The career of Marion Eugenie Bauer (1882-1955) as a composer, editor, writer, teacher, supportive colleague and mentor continues to assert a significant impact on the trajectory of American Music.  It's mysterious that her legacy has been so rarely recalled and her music so infrequently performed in the six decades following her death.  ...  In 1906 she was the first of generations of American composers to study in Paris with the redoubtable Nadia Boulanger.  ...  We're fortunate that the composer crafted her own superb transcription of this sonata for clarinet and piano.  In order to achieve the equivalent musical impact, her viola and clarinet versions differ in some places.  The piano part, nevertheless, remains unchanged.  Sometimes we've opted for the clarinet version, sometimes the viola version, and sometimes a conflation of the two.  We have also made a few adaptive changes in tessitura, articulation, phrasing and dynamics to highlight the unique voice of the alto flute.  Though execution may occasionally differ, the rhetorical and emotional shape of the work remains essentially the same."

Transcribed for Alto Flute (from horn and piano arrangement) by C.A.Vater

    Alto Flute Part, PDF $5.99

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) wrote four horn concertos for his good friend Joseph Leutgeb (1732-1811).   Leutgeb was a virtuoso horn player, who served as principal horn in Salzburg and thus became a colleague of Leopold Mozart, during the young Wolfgang's early years.  Leutgeb appears to have remained a friend and inspiration for W. A. Mozart throughout the composer's life.

The Mozart horn concertos are delightful, joyous works.  The third horn concerto, K.447, like two of the three others, was written in the key of E-flat major.  It is thought to have been composed in 1787.   The work is in typical concerto form, consisting of three movements—an Allegro, a Romanze, and another Allegro, which together have an average performance duration time of approximately 15 minutes.

K.447, Concerto for Horn in E-flat major for Horn and Orchestra, is scored for solo horn in E-flat, with two clarinets, two bassoons, and strings.   Henri Kling (1842-1918), a horn player who was also a composer, conductor, and professor, arranged the concerto for horn and piano.  His transcription was published by Breitkopf und Härtel, n.d. (ca. 1890).  We used the Kling edition, now in the public domain and available as a free pdf download from imslp.org, to create a transcription of the horn part for alto flute.  Our edition incorporates adjustments that account for differences in range and sonority between the alto flute and horn, while striving to maintain the style and character of the original composition.

We provide the alto flute part only; the piano score (horn and piano) by Henri Kling is freely available from imslp.org.

Napoléon Coste (1805-1883) became famous not only as a guitar soloist, but also as a major composer of some 60 works, most of which were written for guitar. His music is in the romantic French style and appreciated for its originality.  His Fantaisie, Op.36, Les Regrets-Cantilène, is a short, single-movement piece written for oboe or violin with piano or harp or guitar.  We created our Noteworthy Sheet Music edition from the difficult-to-read manuscript version in the public domain, available on imslp.org.  We include a score in concert pitch and a part suitable for flute, oboe or violin, as well as a part transcribed for alto flute in G.  The piece falls nicely within the sweet range of the alto flute and our transposition sounds appealing and completely natural on that instrument.  In fact, Les Regrets-Cantilène is gorgeous on either flute or alto flute.  Melodic and sentimental, the work is not overly demanding technically and should appeal to players of a moderate or higher skill level.

Mozart's Horn Concerto No.4, K.495, was composed in 1786 and scored for solo horn, with two oboes, two horns, and strings (bassoon ad libitum).   The work consists of three movements—Allegro moderato, Romanza-Andante, and Rondo-Allegro vivace—with the rousing Rondo clearly evoking a hunt scene.   The horn player Henri Kling (1842-1918) created arrangements of all the Mozart horn concerti for horn and piano.   His transcription of K.495 was published by Breitkopf und Härtel, n.d. Transcribed for Alto Flute (and piano) by C. A. Vater

    Alto Flute part, PDF $8.99

Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) is regarded as one of the greatest Spanish composers of the twentieth century. His Siete canciones populares españolas (“Seven Spanish Folksongs”) is a cycle of traditional songs from various regions of Spain set for voice and piano. Written in 1914, the work quickly became very popular: in 1925, six of the seven songs were arranged for violin and piano as the Suite populaire espagñole by the Polish violinist, composer and arranger Paul Kochánski, and subsequent versions were designed for solo piano, voice and guitar, piano and cello, and orchestra. We created the Noteworthy Sheet Music alto flute part by adapting ideas from both the Falla vocal line and the Kochánski violin line, modifying pitches, articulations, dynamics, etc. as needed to best suit the alto flute’s range and style.  Our alto flute part is intended to be accompanied by piano using the original Falla score for voice and piano, which is available as a free downloadable pdf at imslp.org; we provide only the transcribed alto flute part in the NSM edition.

The seven songs included in the original voice and piano publication, as well as in our alto flute part edition, are El Paño Moruno (“The Moorish Cloth”), Seguidilla murciana (an old dance form, omitted in the Kochánski violin and piano version), Asturiana (a lament from the northern part of Spain), Jota (a familiar dance form from the north east of Spain), Nana (an Andalusian lullaby), Canción (“Song”), and Polo (reminiscent of the zapateado, a Spanish dance rich in flamenco rhythms). This information and an in-depth analysis of the Siete canciones populares españolas, including historical and regional background, music analysis, and an English translation of the lyrics, can be found in the excellent article by composer and conductor Gianmaria Griglio, co-founder and Artistic Director of ARTax Music.

Reger's Romanze is a lovely, short piece in G major, consisting of a single movement, Andante con moto. Written in 1902 for violin (or cello) and piano, the work was published by Breitkopf und Härtel ca.1920 and is now in the public domain. Numerous arrangements and transcriptions of the Romanze, including those for C-flute, trumpet, cello, clarinet, viola, or alto saxophone and piano, and even one for oboe and accordion, attest to the piece's popularity. Alto Flute Part and alternative Flute Part, PDF $8.99

Clara Schumann’s Drei Romanzen für Pianoforte und Violine, Op. 22, were written in 1853 and dedicated to the Schumanns’ great friend, the famous Hungarian violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim, with whom Clara performed the Three Romances when they concertized together on tours across Europe. The Romances are lovely, short pieces; melodic and expressive, they epitomize the Romantic era and represent true chamber music in the sense that both instruments are featured comparably, rather than the piano having a merely accompaniment role. They are nicely adaptable to wind instruments, and are particularly lovely when played on alto flute. Our transcription required few modifications to bring the original violin part completely in range for alto flute and provide flute-friendly, musically-appropriate alternatives to the occasional violin double-stop. Some flutists may wish to mix and match the three movements, preferring to play one or two of the Romances on alto flute and the third on concert flute, or vice versa; so, to that end, we have included in this edition a complete alternative part adapted for C-flute. We do not provide a re-notated copy of the score, however, since high-quality PDFs of the piano and violin score are freely available in the public domain, and are easy to use along with our flute transcriptions of the violin line. Transcribed for Alto Flute by C. A. Vater

Part for Alto Flute (in lieu of voice); PDF $5.99

In her Sechs Lieder, Op. 13, Clara Schumann set to music six German poems—two written by Heinrich Heine (Ich stand in dunklen Träumen and Sie liebten sich beide), three by Emanuel Geibel (Liebeszauber, Der Mond kommt still gegangen, and Die stille Lotosblume) and one by Friedrich Rückert (Ich hab’ in deinem Auge).  Many of Clara Schumann’s songs were composed as gifts for her beloved husband Robert; they are romantic, melodic and highly expressive, and the Sechs Lieder of Op. 13 appropriately convey the broad array of intense emotions portrayed in the poetry that inspired them.  These songs, which are absolutely charming, are nicely adaptable for a solo instrument in lieu of voice.  They have been transcribed previously for violin or cello, and likely other instruments as well, but are particularly lovely when played on either alto flute or clarinet, instruments for which the voice line falls completely in range. Our Noteworthy Sheet Music editions of Op. 13 for alto flute or clarinet do not include re-notated versions of the score, since a high-quality PDF of the original piano and voice score is available free of charge in the public domain, and that piano accompaniment works perfectly well with our instrumental transcriptions of the voice line.  The score we used when creating our parts may be downloaded from the IMSLP website.  For NSM’s clarinet transcription of the Sechs Lieder voice line, please click the link.

Schubert Erlking Duo NSMFranz Schubert (1797-1828), inspired by reading Goethe's poem, wrote his song "Erlkönig" in a few hours in 1815. The song was an immediate hit, and continues to be popular to the present day. John Pratt has created a trio arrangement for flute, cello, and piano (click for more information), and also the duo version offered here with Schubert's solo voice part transposed for cello (or viola or alto flute), and with a less arduous alternative to Schubert's piano accompaniment.

Excerpted from Mr. Pratt's © preface:
"In the duo arrangement, Schubert's solo part is adopted without change. Thus the piano must provide the entire accompaniment, but rocking triplets and other pianistically felicitous passagework replace Schubert's unremitting repetition. The range of sonorities is also wider than Schubert's, though more restrained than that of the trio arrangement, where the flute enlarges the musical terrain. This accompaniment is offered as a less punishing alternative to Schubert's, to be played with a singer or any solo instrument. Solo parts are provided for voice or cello, viola, and alto flute."

Having made significant contributions as a poet, essayist, journalist, and critic, Christian Johann Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) is considered one of the great German writers of the 19th century.  Many of his romantic poems were chosen as the text for Lieder by such eminent composers as Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms.  The Heine poem Auf Flügeln des Gesanges, which translates into English as On Wings of Song, was set to music by Felix Mendelssohn and published as No. 2 of six songs for voice and piano constituting his Opus 34.  Auf Flügeln des Gesanges became one of Mendelssohn's most famous art songs, and remains popular to this day.  Arrangements and transcriptions of the music have been created for small orchestra, flute and guitar, flute and piano, violin and piano, two violins, cello and piano, treble choir, and piano solo, among others.  With its charming, simple melody and narrow pitch range, On Wings of Song is highly accessible and understandably a favorite of vocal and instrumental soloists of all levels.  Our transcription is in the key of G, and the song is especially mellow and lovely when played on alto flute.

Vocalises are songs without words written to provide technical challenges for singers; they are designed to develop flexibility and control, and thus often serve as vocal warm-up exercises.  Gabriel Fauré composed his Vocalise-Étude in 1906, and it was published by Leduc the following year.  The original piece, in the key of E minor and marked Adagio molto tranquillo, includes a piano accompaniment and incorporates various difficulties for the vocal soloist, including wide intervals, unexpected harmonies, and demanding rhythms.

Fauré's Vocalise-Étude has long been recognized as a particularly lovely and poignant piece of music, not merely a vocal exercise but a musical work of intrinsic beauty.  Under its alternative name Pièce, the Vocalise-Étude has been transcribed for various orchestral instruments, including bassoon and piano, flute and piano, and oboe and harp.  We at Noteworthy Sheet Music think the alto flute, with its rich, mellow tone, is the perfect instrument for this moving and somewhat melancholy Fauré melody.  Our transcription for alto flute and piano is based on the version of the Vocalise-Étude for medium voice, in the key of D minor, published by Alphonse Leduc in 1907 and now in the public domain.
