Hello from Noteworthy Sheet Music!

I hope 2024 is going well for all of you so far.  On a personal note, my educational travel adventures this year have taken me to the South Caucasus in April and recently to Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland.  Beautiful destinations!

Clara Op13 Afl nsmClara Schumann/Vater – Sechs Lieder, Op.13 – trans. for Alto Flute (& piano)
In her Sechs Lieder, Op. 13, first published in 1844, Clara Schumann set to music six German poems, the texts of which explore common themes of the German Romantic era.  Many of Clara Schumann’s songs were composed as gifts for her beloved husband Robert; they are typically romantic, melodic and highly expressive.  The Sechs Lieder convey the broad array of intense emotions portrayed in the poetry that inspired them, and they are absolutely charming.  They are also nicely adaptable for a solo instrument in lieu of voice, and are particularly lovely when played on alto flute.  We provide our alto flute part; a piano score is freely available online from IMSLP.  Visit our listing page for further details.

Haydn Op1No1 Flutes nsmHaydn/Pratt Quartet Op.1, No.1 - arr. for Flute Quartet
The divertimento style and instrumental character of Haydn’s early quartets does not evoke strings specifically, and thus arrangement for other instruments is natural and should expand enjoyment of these wonderful first significant Haydn works to other players and audiences.  Haydn’s Quartet Op.1, No.1 recently has been arranged by John W. Pratt as a beautiful, effective flute quartet for two concert flutes, alto flute and bass flute.  You can search for additional NSM flute ensemble arrangements under Multiple Flutes in the drop-down menu on our website.

Glazunov Menestrel A Cl Pno nsmGlazunov/Vater - Chant du Ménestrel, Op.71 - trans. for A-Clarinet & Piano
Alexander Glazunov was a highly precocious student of Rimsky-Korsakov who became a major composer in the late Russian romantic tradition.  He published two versions of his Chant du Ménestrel in 1901, one for cello and orchestra and another for cello and piano, dedicating the work to Alexandre Wierzbilowicz, principal cello at the Russian Imperial Opera Orchestra and a professor at the Conservatory.  Chant du Ménestrel (Minstrel’s Song) is a sorrowful, romantic piece that evokes the image of a Russian troubadour wandering the countryside, singing his sad songs.  The lyrical, expressive solo cello line is without double stops and readily transcribed for other instruments; the piece is especially well-suited to the range and tonal qualities of the A-clarinet.  The NSM edition is available as a PDF download and includes both our transcribed part for clarinet in A and a re-notated score for clarinet and piano.

Bridge 2Pieces Cl Pf nsmBridge/Vater - Two Pieces: Pensiero & Allegro appassionato - trans. for Clarinet & Piano
Certain chamber music works written for viola also work beautifully when transcribed for clarinet, and indeed may actually be coveted by clarinetists.  Brahms’ Two Songs for Voice, Viola and Piano is one such piece, with a clarinet part offered by NSM.  Clarinetists may soon discover that our transcription of Frank Bridge’s Two Pieces: Pensiero and Allegro appassionato, originally for viola and piano, is also well-adapted and enjoyable to play.  As suggested by their titles, these two pieces were written in very different styles, but they complement each other well, showing off Bridge’s composing versatility and providing performers an opportunity to display a range of emotions and capabilities.

Haydn Sym13 multiflute nsmHaydn/Pratt – Symphony No. 13 – arr. for Multiple Flutes
Noteworthy Sheet Music recently published another excellent arrangement for multiple flutes created by John W. Pratt.  A large flute ensemble would be about the size of Haydn’s core orchestra at the time his Symphony No. 13 was composed.  The second movement of this symphony is a beautiful Adagio cantabile, originally for solo cello accompanied by strings, which transcribes nicely for solo alto flute accompanied by the rest of the flute family.  And the trio of the third movement Minuet has a delightful solo flute part with only string accompaniment in the orchestral version.  John Pratt’s arrangement is for a flute ensemble of any size including at least one bass, one alto, and two concert flutes.  Third and fourth concert flute parts are also provided, and all parts can be doubled at will.  If a contrabass flute is available, it can double the bass flute, serving to deepen and enrich the sound.

I hope you find some interesting new repertoire ideas in this Newsletter or by browsing the NSM website at https://noteworthysheetmusic.com/.  Your feedback and suggestions are always welcome, so please don’t hesitate to email me.

All the best,
Carol
