Holiday Greetings from Noteworthy Sheet Music!

I’m just back from another visit to Southeast Asia, this time to Cambodia. If you’re interested, check out a few more of my travel photos on NSM’s Instagram and Facebook pages.

Sing-Along Materialssing along nsm r, arranged by John W. Pratt
First, a reminder that NSM offers free community sing-along materials including large-font lyrics sheets and piano scores with modifications or arrangements created by John W. Pratt. Download PDFs of your favorite old songs and holiday carols ... great for celebrating during family get-togethers or senior center sing-alongs.

Schubert RondoD895 Fl nsmSchubert/Vater & Pratt - Rondo in B minor - trans. for Flute (and Piano)
We’ve adapted Schubert’s wonderful Rondo in B minor (Rondeau brilliant, D.895), written originally for violin and piano, for flute. Where needed, our transcription provides effective flute-friendly solutions to the string-specific notation, so the piece can be played comfortably and beautifully on flute. The Rondo is virtuosic in places, showy and exciting, and a joy to play.

SchumannC Op22 Afl Fl nsmSchumann/Vater - Three Romances - trans. for Alto Flute or Flute (and Piano)
Clara Schumann’s Three Romances, Op.22 are nicely adaptable to wind instruments, and especially lovely on either alto flute or flute. The pieces are melodic and expressive, epitomizing the Romantic era. They also represent true chamber music in the sense that both instruments are featured comparably, rather than the piano having a mere accompaniment role. Check out NSM’s new edition that includes parts for both alto flute and flute.

Glazunov Elegy Cl nsmGlazunov/Pratt - Elegy - trans. for Clarinet (and Piano)
Glazunov/Pratt - Elegy - trans. for Alto Flute or Flute (and Piano)
Alexander Glazunov’s short Elegy, Op.44, was written for viola and piano in 1893. The viola melody is lovely and we now offer two transcription editions, one with a part for B-flat clarinet and one with parts for either flute or alto flute.

Danzi Op62 fl pf NSMDanzi – Grande Sonate - Piano and Basset Horn
Danzi/Pratt – Grande Sonate - trans. for Piano and Flute
Franz Danzi’s Grande Sonate, Op.62, originally for piano and basset horn, alternates sparkle with rich mellow beauty in large measure. We recently published a modern, re-notated edition for basset horn that’s much easier to read than the original manuscript available on imslp.org. Then, since we at NSM had grown quite fond of this piece, and because it is well-suited to either flute or clarinet, we decided to transcribe it for both instruments, so we and our friends could enjoy playing it. We’ve completed our piano and flute edition, transcribed and edited by John W. Pratt. Do check it out if you’re in the mood to try some enjoyable new repertoire. A clarinet edition will follow in another month or so.

tchaikovsky.nutcracker flhp nsmTchaikovsky/Rupert - The Nutcracker - Flute and Harp, or The Nutcracker - Flute and Piano
As usual this time of year, with the holidays fast approaching, I’d like to remind those of you who don’t already have a copy of Mary Jane Rupert’s wonderful Nutcracker arrangement that NSM offers two editions—one for flute and harp, and another for flute and piano. You can purchase PDF’s of the complete Nutcracker publications or download the seven pieces individually—March, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Trepak (Russian Dance), Arab Dance, Chinese Dance, Dance of the Reed Flutes, and Waltz of the Flowers.

Lydia KakabadseFinally, I’d like to congratulate Lydia Kakabadse, an NSM contributing composer, on the November 15th release of her new CD of choral and vocal works, ITHAKA (Divine Art Recordings Group, Catalogue No. DDA 25188). Half of the CD is dedicated to Kakabadse’s stunning choral work ‘Odyssey’, which was commissioned by the Hellenic Institute at Royal Holloway University of London; the second half showcases a set of songs written in 2018 and 2019, spanning a range of styles. Previously, NSM published two of Lydia Kakabadse’s chamber works, Russian Tableaux for string quartet and The Song of the Shirt for soprano (or alto flute) and piano.

For other editions that may be of interest to you but are not mentioned in this latest Newsletter, please visit the NSM website and search under “Browse Sheet Music” for something you may like ... you can search by instrument (under winds, brass, strings, percussion, keyboards), or by voice parts, ensemble, ethnicity, etc. As always, your feedback is welcome, so feel free to contact me directly with any comments or suggestions regarding our Noteworthy Sheet Music offerings. I greatly appreciate your continued support, and I ask that you please spread a good word about Noteworthy Sheet Music to your friends and colleagues.
