Greetings from Noteworthy Sheet Music!

We’ve introduced several new composers and added quite a bit more repertoire to the Noteworthy Sheet Music catalog since our last newsletter. Here’s an update to fill you in on some of what’s new at NSM (click the title links to access the website listings for additional information):

Kakabadse Russian nsmKakabadse - Russian Tableaux - String Quartet

Please give a warm welcome to Lydia Kakabadse, the newest member of NSM’s family of distinguished contemporary composers contributing exceptional new music to NSM’s sheet music catalog. We’re delighted to have just published her beautiful, moving piece Russian Tableaux for string quartet (violin, viola, cello, and double bass). Rich in Russian character, the work has three movements: Mother Volga; 1917; and Dance of the Matryoshka Dolls. Visit the NSM website to learn more about this highly-acclaimed British composer and Russian Tableaux; you can also read insightful comments about the piece by the celebrated violist Sarah-Jane Bradley, and access links to audio samples of Russian Tableaux from Kakabadse’s Naxos CD, “The Phantom Listeners”.

Mozart Kegelstatt Afl nsmMozart/Pratt - Kegelstatt Trio - Alto Flute (and Viola and Piano)

The clarinet part for Mozart’s “Kegelstatt” Trio, K.498, works beautifully on alto flute. Not one, but two of NSM's most adept arrangers submitted transcriptions for alto flute. Give it a try and we think you’ll agree that the alto flute, viola, and piano arrangement is a natural. The NSM edition includes John W. Pratt’s alto flute part and a program note by flutist Peter H. Bloom, who has been performing the Kegelstatt Trio on tour with Ensemble Aubade.

Schubert Auf-dem-Strom VoClPf nsmSchubert/Vater - Auf dem Strom - Voice, Clarinet, and Piano

Earlier this year, Noteworthy Sheet Music published an edition of Schubert’s Auf dem Strom, with the obbligato transcribed for A-clarinet. Based on our own readings, we think that a well-played clarinet can do justice to this beautiful lied by Schubert, and we hope that clarinetists and their audiences will appreciate this addition to the voice/clarinet/piano repertoire. The NSM edition includes a piano score and parts for voice and A-clarinet obbligato.

Finlayson Moon-Shadows nsmFinlayson - Moon Shadows - Winds & Percussion

We were delighted for the opportunity to publish Walter Finlayson’s piece Moon Shadows for winds and percussion. Thought to have been written in the late 1930’s or early 1940’s, the composition seems ahead of its time in terms of style and sophistication. Scored for two flutes, two B clarinets, bass clarinet, bells, vibraphone, xylophone, finger cymbals, maracas, bongos, roll cymbals, temple blocks, and tympani, Moon Shadows is a very interesting and energetic work, written by a composer/arranger/musician/educator with ties to Jimmie Lunceford and Artie Shaw, among other greats of the era. Please visit our website for additional information about Moon Shadows and Walter Finlayson.

Beach Ecstasy nsmBeach/Vater - Ecstasy - Voice, Alto Flute or Clarinet, and Piano

We celebrated the 150th anniversary of Mrs. H. H. A. Beach’s birth with a new edition of her song Ecstasy (Op.19, No.2), with the original violin obbligato transcribed for either alto flute or clarinet. Our publication includes piano scores, voice parts, alto flute obbligato parts, and alternative alto flute solo and clarinet obbligato parts, for both the “Low voice” and “High voice” versions of Ecstasy created by Amy Beach.

Brahms Drei-Duette nsmBrahms/Pratt - Drei Duette - Two Voices and Piano, with Alternative Instrumental Parts

The vocal parts of Brahms’ Drei Duette, Opus 20, lie well for many instruments, opening the possibility of mixed voice and instrument, as well as fully-instrumental, performances. If one voice is replaced by an instrument, no words will be lost and the result will be a song with wonderful instrumental obbligato and piano accompaniment. If two solo instruments are used, the result is a beautiful "song without words." We provide transcriptions of both voices for oboe/violin (or flute), alto flute, and clarinet, and of the lower voice for viola as well.

Robichaux Recurrence nsmRobichaux - Recurrence - Flute and Piano

Noteworthy Sheet Music was very pleased to welcome composer Ben Robichaux as a new contributor to our catalog last May, when we published his engrossing new work for flute and piano, titled Recurrence. You can read the composer's program notes on the piece, listen to an audio sample of the premiere performance of Recurrence, view a preview page of the score, and learn more about the composer on the NSM website.

Weber Op.35 sax nsmWeber/Pratt - Andante e Rondo Ongarese - Alto Saxophone (and Piano)

Please pass along this news to your saxophonist friends & colleagues: Carl Maria von Weber’s Andante e Rondo Ongarese (Op.35), written for viola and later revised for bassoon, makes a great transcription for alto saxophone (and piano) … challenging and fun to play. Check out our alto saxophone edition, created by John Pratt and available as a pdf download from the NSM website.

WeGather BW4 nsmValerius/Pratt - We Gather Together - Brass Quartet

Last year we published John Pratt’s arrangement of this piece for woodwind quintet. Now, in time for the 2017 Thanksgiving holiday, we’ve just published John’s joyous arrangement of We Gather Together for brass quartet. This old Christian hymn of Dutch origin was composed by Adrianus Valerius and was originally published as Wilt heden nu treden in 1626. We Gather Together has become the most popular song associated with the traditional Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. John first livened up the tune in a piano version for his family’s annual gathering; the piano sheet music is available as a free PDF download from NSM, found under Sing-Along Materials. His new brass rendition is scored for two trumpets, horn, and trombone; see the NSM listing to view a preview page and listen to an audio sample.

Hall's New Concert and Quadrille Band reprises the repertoire, style, and spirit of the illustrious Hall Brothers' Band that were applauded from Maine to Louisiana from the late 1840s through the 1870s.

As always, I thank you for your continued interest and support. We strive to provide our colleagues and customers with captivating new repertoire and sheet music of the highest quality. Although our main focus remains music for flute, we’ve expanded our catalog to include more works for strings, winds, percussion, and brass; and now we also offer some excellent CDs. With best wishes,

Carol
