Hello everyone!

vercoe.butterfly.nsmThe first news I’d like to pass along regards a rave review of Elizabeth Vercoe’s piece Butterfly Effects for flute(s) and harp.  The review, written by Nicole Riner, was published in the Fall 2015 edition of the National Flute Association’s member magazine, The Flutist QuarterlyYou can access the review on the NFA website if you’re a member; otherwise, you can read the review on the Noteworthy Sheet Music website, reprinted with permission from the NFA.

Since our previous Newsletter we’ve added some new listings to our Catalog, several of which are mentioned below.  Please click on the title links to access additional information about these pieces on the NSM website.

Bloom FTD nsmBloom - From the Drawer - Tenor or Soprano with Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, and Horn

We recently published a new composition from flutist Peter H. Bloom called From the Drawer, which features a tenor or soprano soloist accompanied by a quartet of winds. The work provides a fitting, emotional musical setting for the powerful and poignant text of the 1923 poem by Constantine Cavafy.

Brahms Op120 No2 Afl nsmBrahms/Pratt - Sonata, Opus 120 No.1 and Sonata, Opus 120 No.2 - Alto Flute (and Piano)

The Brahms sonatas of Opus 120 were written originally for clarinet, but the composer himself created versions of both sonatas for violin and viola, suggesting perhaps that he would have welcomed John Pratt’s expert transcriptions of these works for alto flute.  The transcriptions of these familiar and beloved sonatas work remarkably well and are a pure joy to play on alto flute.

Schumann Funf-Stucke-Op102 nsmSchumann/Pratt - Fünf Stücke im Volkston, Opus 102 - Alto Flute (and Piano)

Robert Schumann’s Fünf Stücke im Volkston (Five Pieces in Folk Style), Opus 102, were written for violoncello (or violin) and piano. Clara Schumann thought them beguiling, fresh, original, and under-appreciated.  Already arranged for numerous other instruments, and popular for good reason, we are pleased to offer our version for alto flute.

Mendelssohn Op114 Bn-2 nsmMendelssohn/Pratt - Concert Piece No.2, Opus 114 - Two Winds (and Piano)

Mendelssohn's Concert Piece No.2 is a show-piece written for clarinet, basset horn, and piano.  It is very suitable for transcription, even aside from the rarity of the basset horn today.  Mr. Pratt has created three versions of each of the two wind parts (flute or oboe, in addition to the original clarinet, for the primo part; and bassoon, clarinet, or english horn for the secondo part).  Players can mix and match these primo and secondo parts at will.

Coming soon, the Snow Pond Composers Workshop Anthology New Music for Flute 2015. The anthology, edited by Joshua Tomlinson, includes compositions by all eleven participating composers of the first annual composers workshop at the Snow Pond Music Festival, which took place in June, 2015.  Check the NSM website in December for publication of this eagerly-awaited compilation.

tchaikovsky.nutcracker flhp nsmWith the holidays fast approaching once again, let me close by reminding you of Mary Jane Rupert’s enthusiastically-reviewed arrangement of the seasonal classic by Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker. We offer two editionsone for flute and harp and another for flute and piano.  Customers may purchase a PDF or print copy of the complete Nutcracker edition or download separate PDFs of the seven individual pieces.

With kind regards and best wishes for a happy holiday season,

Carol
