Hello everyone!  There’s a lot of NSM news to report since our last newsletter.

Our website, www.NoteworthySheetMusic.com, has recently undergone an upgrade, so please check out the new features when you next visit the site.  Our repertoire is now better organized, with more options in the drop-down menus and with every listing having a set of “tags” which makes searching (by instrument, ensemble type, etc.) easier and more efficient.  Best of all, there’s a real shopping cart, so multiple items can be ordered at once.

We’ve added quite a few new listings to our Catalog.  Click on the links below to access additional information about these pieces on the website.

vercoe.butterfly.nsmVercoe - Butterfly Effects - Flute(s) and Harp.

I’m thrilled to announce that NSM has published Elizabeth Vercoe’s extraordinary work Butterfly Effects for flute(s) and harp.  The piece was written for the duo “2”, with flutist Peter H. Bloom and harpist Mary Jane Rupert.  It is an intriguing and varied piece in seven sections in which the flutist plays bass flute, alto flute, concert flute, and piccolo.  The titles of the movements are the names of butterflies:  Mourningcloak, Banded Blue Pierrot, Common Jezebel, Question Mark, Monkey Puzzle, Karner Blues, and Psyche.  Fittingly, the strikingly beautiful image chosen for the cover of our publication is of the painting "Jezebel Tapestry #2" by Louisa King Fraser, used with the artist's permission.  Butterfly Effects is available either in print edition or as a PDF download from the NSM website.

MendelssohnOWOS.NSMMendelssohn - On Wings of Song - Transcribed for Alto Flute and Piano.

The poem Auf Flügeln des Gesanges, which translates into English as On Wings of Song, was written by the 19th century German poet Heinrich Heine and set to music by Felix Mendelssohn.  The piece became one of Mendelssohn’s most famous art songs and remains a favorite of vocal and instrumental solists to this day.  We find it especially lovely on alto flute, and have recently published our transcription for alto flute and piano.

elgar.chanson de matin.flpf.nsmElgar - Chanson de Matin - Transcribed for Flute or Alto Flute and Piano.

This is a short, incredibly sweet piece that works beautifully on either flute or alto flute, so we offer two transcriptions.  Written by the British composer Edward Elgar for violin and piano c.1889-1890, Chanson de Matin, Op.15, No.2 has great melodic appeal.  The work has achieved enduring popularity, and has been transcribed and arranged for a wide variety of solo instruments and groups.  It is a delightful piece that both performers and audiences will enjoy.

faure piece nsmFauré - Pièce (Vocalise-Étude)  - Transcribed for Alto Flute and Piano.

We’ve added another of Gabriel Fauré’s works to our list of alto flute transcriptions, which already included his Berceuse and Sicilienne.  The Vocalise-Étude, composed by Fauré in 1906, provides various difficulties for the soloist, including wide intervals, unexpected harmonies, and demanding rhythms.  The beauty and utility of this piece was quickly recognized by instrumentalists as well as vocalists, and various transcriptions were published under the alternate title of Pièce.  We now offer our own version of this moving and somewhat melancholy Fauré melody, for alto flute and piano.
