Greetings everyone!

Thanks to some warmer weather during the past few days, most of the Blizzard ’13 snow has melted away here in Massachusetts and it’s beginning to feel like Spring.  During the cold months of January and February we added several new listings to our online catalog at NSM.  I hope you’ll find these new selections as tantalizing and enjoyable as we do.

beethoven adelaide nsmBeethoven  Adelaide  for flute and piano.

Beethoven created his musical setting of Friedrich von Matthisson’s poem Adelaide as a song for voice and piano.  An anonymous arrangement of the piece for flute, in “bel canto” style and likely adapted from one created for clarinet by Iwan Müller, was published in the second quarter of the 19th century.  We love this arrangement of “Adelaide” so much that we decided to offer a renotated modern edition, in addition to our facsimile of the original publication.  The piece is exceptionally beautiful and emotional—a joy for players and audiences alike.

dieter the golden reade flute nsmEugene Dieter  The Golden “Reade” Flute  for flute & piano.

“The Golden ‘Reade’ Flute” was dedicated to flutist Elmer Reade who, along with his gold flute by William S. Haynes, inspired the title.  The piece is a lovely barcarole, a single Andante moderato movement with interesting writing for both instruments.

hatton wreck_of_the_hesperus 250Hatton/Longfellow The Wreck of the Hesperus arranged for tenor, flute, clarinet, violin,  viola, & double bass.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s narrative poem “The Wreck of the Hesperus”, about a tragic sea voyage ending in shipwreck, was set to music for voice and piano by John Liptrot Hatton.  NSM is delighted to offer a compelling arrangement of this work for theatre or salon orchestra created by flutist and NSM editorial consultant Peter H. Bloom.  This adaptation of “The Wreck of the Hesperus” was conceived for the now-retired D.C. Hall’s New Concert and Quadrille Band of Boston, and you can listen to audio of TWOTH from that group’s CD recording “Grand Concert” on the NSM website.  The piece is a showcase for tenor, so please pass along the link to all your tenor friends.

herman.op.86 duo1 248Jules Herman Grands Duos Concertants, Op.86, Duo 1 duet for two flutes.

We’ve recently typeset a new edition of the first of the three Jules Herman Op.86 flute duets.  “Fine examples of concert-worthy duets of the late 19th century”, the Herman works are challenging and gratifying but, sadly, little known to present-day flutists.  Consider taking a break from Kuhlau and giving Herman a try.

sarasate op.22 image 240pxPablo de Sarasate Romanza Andaluza transcribed for flute.

Written originally for violin and piano, Sarasate’s “Romanza Andaluza”, Op.22, has been transcribed for flute by Peter H. Bloom and performed often by his flute and piano duo “2” (with Mary Jane Rupert).  This is an adaptation for the flute virtuoso - created by Mr. Bloom in the spirit of Sarasate, “to amuse, amaze, and engage the audience while providing a satisfying challenge to the performer”.

debussy.premiere rhapsodie.nsmClaude Debussy Première Rhapsodie transcribed for alto flute.

Debussy's “Première Rhapsodie” was composed as a ‘morceau de concours’ for the Paris Conservatoire in 1910 and has endured as an essential work at the heart of the clarinet repertoire ever since.  I took up the challenge of creating a transcription of this beloved work, and now that it’s complete we at NSM think the piece works beautifully on alto flute.  I hope you will agree that, although the sonorities are of course different than when played on clarinet, our alto flute version retains the beguiling, charming, nearly mesmerizing character of the original work.  I’d love to hear your comments on this transcription after you’ve spent some time with it.

As always, you can preview the first pages of our scores or parts on the NSM website from the individual article listings.

We send our congratulations to the winner and finalists of the 33rd Annual Pappoutsakis Flute Competition.  NSM was proud to help support the competition as a prize donor.
