Altès - Premier Solo pour La Flûte - Flute & Piano
Premier Solo pour La Flûte, Op. 20, by Henry Altès
Facsimile Edition by Noteworthy Sheet Music
with a Foreword by Peter H. BloomFlute Part and Piano Score, PDF $12.75
Henry Altès (1826-1899) is primarily remembered today as the author of a particularly useful Méthode Complète de Flûte (1906), yet his impact on fellow flutists for nearly a century-and-a-half can hardly be overestimated. A student of the Boehm flute pioneer Louis Dorus, Altès succeeded Dorus as Professeur au Conservatoire de Parisupon upon the latter's retirement in 1869 and served in that capacity for a record twenty-eight years. Premier Solo pour La Flûte was dedicated to Louis Dorus, and was the first of ten Morceaux des Concours that Altès would write for the annual Paris Conservatory competition. That this was the only one of the ten to have been required in two contests speaks to its endearing durability. (excerpted from the foreword by P. H. Bloom)
The NSM edition of the Premier Solo pour La Flûte avec Accompagnement de Piano by Henry Altès is an “enhanced” facsimile of the original print publication from Paris, chez S. Richault, Editeur, Boulevard Poissonniere, 26 au 1er, R4241. We used an image editing program to clean up digital

Grande Fantaisie, Op. 77, by T. Berbiguier
Gassett Collection - Facsimile Edition by C.A.Vater/Noteworthy Sheet Music, with a Foreword by Peter H. Bloom
Flute and Piano Parts, PDF $16.99
Benoit Tranquille Berbiguier (1782-1838) was among the preeminent European flutists of the early nineteenth century. Berbiguier was a prolific composer, and his nearly 150 published works include sets of duos and trios for flutes, as well as music that features flute with piano, orchestra, and chamber ensembles. His Grande Fantaisie avec Variations pour Flûte avec Accompagnement de Piano Forte (Opus 77) was composed on two motifs from Der Freischütz, Carl Maria von Weber's monumental opera which premiered in Berlin in 1821 and became an immediate international sensation. Sheet music for flute and piano.

Les Regrets, Op.104, by T. Berbiguier
Gassett Collection - Facsimile Edition by C.A.Vater/NSM, with a Foreword by Peter H. Bloom
Flute Part and Piano Score, PDF $18.00
Berbiguier dedicated Les Regrets (Mélodie Concertante, Opus 104) to his close friend, the composer-'cellist Pierre-Louis Hus-Desforges. Les Regrets appears to be a missive of consolation from one musical colleague to another, both disillusioned and scarred veterans of decades of nationalist French intrigue. Though the initial theme is a plaintive rendering of a dour dead-march, its development is mournfully elegant. The subsequent developments serve to uplift performer and listener with a musical meditation that, though turbulent, avoids bathos. Dashes of a bit of scherzo here and there move the music, ultimately, to an heroic major-key finale.

Nouvelle Fantaisie pour Flûte, Op. 80, by T. Berbiguier
Gassett Collection - Facsimile Edition by C.A.Vater/Noteworthy Sheet Music, with a Foreword by Peter H. Bloom
Flute and Piano Parts, PDF $13.50
Berbiguier's Nouvelle Fantaisie (Opus 80), like his Grande Fantaisie (Opus 77), was composed on melodies from Carl Maria von Weber's genre-defining opera Der Freischütz. Both pieces were published around 1825. Enthusiasm for Der Freischütz continued to build in subsequent decades, as evinced by the nearly numberless fantaisies, paraphrases, souvenirs, and variations that have been published. Melodies from Freischutz pervade the classic repertoire of instruments from aeolian pianola to zither, including examples for concertina, mandolin, saxophone, and ocarina quartet. Piano and flute sheet music.

Cavatine, Op.37, by Napoléon Coste
Transcribed for Alto Flute and Piano by C.A.Vater
Piano Score and Alto Flute Part, PDF $8.25
Napoléon Coste (1805-1883) was born in a small village in the Départment of the Doubs, France. He began to play guitar at the age of 6, studying with his mother who was an accomplished guitar performer. Napoléon himself began teaching and performing on guitar as a teenager. At age 24 he moved to Paris, where he studied under Fernando Sor, the renowned Spanish classical guitarist and composer. Coste quickly established himself as a virtuoso and is widely acknowledged as the dominant French guitarist of his era.
Coste became famous not only as a guitar soloist, but also as a major composer of some 60 works, most of which were written for guitar. His Op.37 "Cavatine" is a short, single-movement piece for piano and oboe (or violin or flute). Melodic but lively in places, the work should appeal to amateurs of a moderate or higher skill level. Our transposition of Cavatine falls nicely within the range of the alto flute and sounds appealing and completely natural on that instrument. The Noteworthy Sheet Music edition includes a score for piano and alto flute, in addition to the

Napoléon Coste (1805-1883) became famous not only as a guitar soloist, but also as a major composer of some 60 works, most of which were written for guitar. His music is in the romantic French style and appreciated for its originality. His Fantaisie, Op.36, Les Regrets-Cantilène, is a short, single-movement piece written for oboe or violin with piano or harp or guitar. We created our Noteworthy Sheet Music edition from the difficult-to-read manuscript version in the public domain, available on imslp.org. We include a score in concert pitch and a part suitable for flute, oboe or violin, as well as a part transcribed for alto flute in G. The piece falls nicely within the sweet range of the alto flute and our transposition sounds appealing and completely natural on that instrument. In fact, Les Regrets-Cantilène is gorgeous on either flute or alto flute. Melodic and sentimental, the work is not overly demanding technically and should appeal to players of aDebussy - Première Rhapsodie - Alto Flute
Première Rhapsodie, by Claude Debussy
Transcribed for Alto Flute by C.A.Vater, with a Foreword by P.H.Bloom
Alto Flute Part ― PDF $5.99
Since its introduction as a morceau de concours for the Paris Conservatoire in 1910, Debussy's Première Rhapsodie has been an essential piece of the clarinet repertoire.... Although most of the morceaux are, by definition, run-of-the mill exercises of virtuosity à la mode, a number have endured as works of significant musical merit. Debussy's Première Rhapsodie is one such piece. It's a vehicle for expressive interpretation and artistry, with charm, warmth, passion, and humor; a lasting treasure at the core of every clarinetist's collection of indispensable works.... But a transcription? Of a work by Debussy - the great colorist of instrumental sonority? From clarinet to alto-flute?... Each and every element, in fact, evokes the alto-flute!... Of course the piece sounds different on the two instruments. Although the sonic hues are different, the colors are just as vivid. The distinct sonorities of the alto-flute support the nuance, the affect, and the power of the work. (excerpted from Peter H. Bloom © 2012)

Sonata in D Major, Op.10, No.1, by François Devienne
Duet transcribed for Flute and Clarinet
Score and Parts, PDF $9.99François Devienne (1759-1803) was a French composer, flutist and bassoonist, as well as a professor at the Paris Conservatory. His compositional output included: 12 operas; many concerted pieces for various wind instruments, with orchestra; overtures; concertos, quartets, trios, sonatas, etc. for flute, piano, and other instruments; 12 suites; numerous romances, chansons, etc.; and an influential flute method book, Méthode de flûte (1795).

Noteworthy Sheet Music published this edition of Devienne's Sonata in D Major, Op.10, No.1 at the suggestion of flutist Richard A. Evans, who long ago obtained the original flute-flute duet from the Library of Congress and believed it undeserving of its current obscurity. Aware of the paucity of repertoire available for flute and clarinet, and realizing the piece would work nicely for that instrument pair as well, he transcribed the second flute part for B♭ clarinet. We at NSM agreed that the duet, which has two movements, Allegro spirituoso and Rondo: Allegro poco presto, should be made more readily available to present-day musicians and audiences. Salute to New York, A Song for the Flute, by Louis Drouet
Edited and with a Foreword by P. H. Bloom

Louis-Francois-Philippe Drouet (1792-1873) is one of the most highly esteemed flute virtuosi in history. Innumerable contemporary press accounts of his concert triumphs throughout Europe attest to his technical brilliance and exquisite musicianship. He was a prolific and accomplished composer, author, flute theoretician, and pedagogue. His many etudes are still prescribed as tools for flute mastery. His Method of Flute Playing (1830) and 72 Studies on Style and Taste (1855) provide us with useful information concerning instrumental technique and

Trio, Op.45, by Louise Farrenc
Transcribed for Viola by C.A.Vater and J.W.Pratt (originally for cello)
Viola Part, PDF $9.99
The Farrenc Trio for Flute, Cello, and Piano, Op.45 is a big romantic piece, at times stirring, sweet, stormy, sad, dramatic, or lively, but always compelling throughout its entire four movements. As a flutist, I have enjoyed playing this piece many times, so I was intrigued and delighted to receive a request from flutist Peter H. Bloom that NSM prepare a transcription of the cello part for viola, so that his group Ensemble Aubade could perform a flute/viola/piano version. As Peter Bloom commented, the Trio is “not just a good piece to have been written by a woman in the 19th century; it’s a very good piece for anyone to have written anytime.” The Trio actually feels perfect for the viola, as most of the original cello part lies within viola range, and sections that do not can be modified for the viola tessitura without straying significantly from the composer’s musical intent. Our edition provides only the transcribed viola part; PDFs of the original score and flute part are freely available at ...
Fauré - Berceuse - Alto Flute & Piano
Berceuse, Op.16, by Gabriel Fauré
Transcribed for Alto Flute and Piano by C.A.Vater
Piano Score and Alto Flute Part, PDF $6.99
Gabriel Fauré composed his Berceuse(Op. 16) for violin (or cello) and piano in 1878-1879, and it was first published by J. Hamelle, Paris. To this day, the Berceuse remains one of Fauré's most beloved and popular works. The piece is simple but beautiful, short, with a quiet sweet melody that appeals to both performers and audiences alike. It is no wonder that over the years the Berceuse has been transcribed for many other instruments; arrangements have been created for solo piano, viola, flute, alto saxophone, flute and harp, and string quartet, in addition to the composer's own arrangement for violin and orchestra.
Now, in response to an excellent suggestion we received from one of our customers, we add our own version of the Fauré Berceuse, a transcription for alto flute and piano. Perhaps we are biased, but we think the alto flute is a wonderful instrument choice for this lullaby. The piece is suitable for players of all levels.
...Fauré - Pièce - Alto Flute & Piano
Pièce (Vocalise-Étude), by Gabriel Fauré
Transcribed for Alto Flute and Piano by C.A.Vater
Alto Flute Part and Piano Score, PDF $4.99
Vocalises are songs without words written to provide technical challenges for singers; they are designed to develop flexibility and control, and thus often serve as vocal warm-up exercises. Gabriel Fauré composed his Vocalise-Étude in 1906, and it was published by Leduc the following year. The original piece, in the key of E minor and marked Adagio molto tranquillo, includes a piano accompaniment and incorporates various difficulties for the vocal soloist, including wide intervals, unexpected harmonies, and demanding rhythms.
Fauré's Vocalise-Étude has long been recognized as a particularly lovely and poignant piece of music, not merely a vocal exercise but a musical work of intrinsic beauty. Under its alternative name Pièce, the Vocalise-Étude has been transcribed for various orchestral instruments, including bassoon and piano, flute and piano, and oboe and harp. We at Noteworthy Sheet Music think the alto flute, with its rich, mellow tone, is the perfect instrument for this moving and somewhat melancholy Fauré melody. Our transcription for alto flute and piano is based on the version of the
